(PhD, Georgetown) is Managing Partner of City Square Associates. In that role he has designed research for and provided creative and strategic advice to a wide range of clients in both the private and public sector including the networks and digital platforms of NBC Universal, ABC Disney, MTV Networks, Capital One Financial, Intuit, and several agencies and departments of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He has studied consumer behavior and attitudes in nearly every major American market from coast to coast and he has designed and implemented strategic planning and communication processes to bring the evidence of consumer research to bear in business planning.
Chris has developed a particular competency in media and entertainment. Since 1993, he has been designing and conducting research for multiple departments and divisions of the corporate entity now known as NBC Universal. Over a span of ten years from 1993 to 2013 he designed and led an ongoing series of diagnostic and strategic studies for NBC News specifically. And, in more recent years he has conducted a series of studies with cross-platform media buyers and planners on behalf of NBCU's cable entertainment networks and extensive research for the NBC Sports Group.
During the same time period, he has also been providing leadership and advice to non-commercial television, helping public television to develop a strategic approach to primetime programming, improving the accessibility of its content in the new media environment, and cultivating ratings and research literacy among public television professionals. He has designed and fielded both qualitative and quantitative research for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting [CPB], the Public Broadcasting Service [PBS] and for major producing stations WGBH-Boston, WNET-New York, and WETA-Washington. In addition, Chris brings experience in studies of branding positioning, consumer credit, corporate culture, higher education, and the application of research methodology in the not-for-profit and public policy arenas.
Prior to founding City Square, Chris was senior research analyst and director of business excellence at The Taylor Group of Portsmouth (NH). He is a past instructor in business ethics and media studies at Stonehill College in North Easton, MA, and for the past ten years has served as Adjunct Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Bunker Hill Community College.
Chris is a Co-founder of Boston Chefs, Inc., an Internet-based cross-media marketing platform for chefs and restaurateurs, where he continues to oversee marketing and finance. He is past member and vice chairman the Board of Trustees for the Gay Men's Domestic Violence Project, and is a past member and co-chairman, of the WGBH-Boston Community Advisory Board. He has also been involved in a variety of other community and philanthropic efforts including the organization and hosting of an annual benefit ("Flavors of Fall") in support of local community based organizations in CSA's hometown of Cambridge.
(MA, Boston College; BA, Brandeis University) is a Partner at City Square. She is an innovative customer insights professional with nearly two decades of experience working with the world’s top brands. A sociologist and mixed-methodologist, she believes harnessing and disseminating the consumer voice demands a healthy mix of deference and creativity.
Karen is experienced in both qualitative and quantitative research. In her previous roles as Senior Director of Research & Insights at Latinum Network and Director in the Idea Group at Communispace, Corp., (now C-Space) Karen delivered strategic results and a return on clients' research investment.
She has expertise in multicultural research and has developed several original methodologies aimed at creating more immediately actionable insights. Karen has co-authored Harvard Business School case studies and taught undergrads at both Boston College and Emerson College. She is the current chair of the Ballston Spa Education Foundation, which raises and distributes funds for educators to enhance the educational experience of students in grades K-12 in Ballston Spa, NY. Karen graduated with honors from Brandeis University and was awarded a Master's in Sociology at Boston College.
(MA, Trent University; BA, Boston University) is the Research Director at City Square Associates. Phil is responsible for overseeing both qualitative and quantitative research projects, beginning from the preliminary design stage all the way through reporting and implementation. While fully involved in most research projects, his work has focused primarily on quantitative data management, analysis, and visualization, having contributed to studies on secondary and post-secondary education, non-profit executive leadership, media and advertising, online learning, and public media.
Phil’s approach to market research is deeply rooted in the social sciences, having earned his BA in Archaeology from Boston University (summa cum laude), and his MA in Anthropology from Trent University. Guided by a holistic interest in human culture and behavior, he has pursued research experiences ranging from ethnographic studies to archaeological excavations, and has worked in diverse fields such as real estate, education, and cultural resource management. He remains committed to problem-oriented, data-driven research that helps build useful, informative narratives about the human experience, and looks forward to learning from future CSA endeavors.
(MA, University of Chicago) is adjunct Senior Research Consultant and Process Facilitator at City Square Associates Inc.She has 20 years of experience in tactical and strategic marketing research gained through her work in research and company leadership at three New England firms: City Square, The Taylor Research & Consulting Group, and TideWatch Partners. During her time with these firms, she led executive-level customer satisfaction measurement work for Verizon for 15 years; moderated and interviewed across a wide array of segments and industries; mentored, trained, and supervised research staff; and shaped operational and strategic direction, ultimately reaching the Vice President level.
Vivian is a RIVA-trained and field-seasoned focus group moderator and in-depth interviewer, with experience across a wide range of consumer and business segments, from Millennials to Boomers, from retail shopper to medical doctors.
Vivian—working as part of the CSA team—has managed or fielded studies for PBS, NBC Universal, ABC Family, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Capital One
Financial. Other clients with whom she's worked include A&E, American Express Publishing, AT&T Mobility, Bayer, CNET, Covidien Pharmaceuticals, DirecTV, GlaxoSmithKline, Puerto Rico Telephone, Roche, Samsung, Sanofi-Aventis, The Home Depot, Timberland, T-Fal, and Verizon.
Vivian's experience extends into the non-profit arena with work she has conducted for The Fetzer Institute as part of its Campaign for Love and Forgiveness, and for the Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition (CIIC). For Fetzer, Vivian was a member of the program team for two years that oversaw and managed the Campaign, conducting interviews and survey research among participants and instructors of love and forgiveness workshops nationally. For the CIIC, Vivian led qualitative research exploring attitudes toward childhood vaccination, especially H1N1.
(BA, University of California, Irvine) is the Director of Business Operations at City Square Associates. Blake manages the company’s financial realm, from negotiating vendor contracts to processing payroll. With an emphasis on detail and affinity for analytics, Blake ensures that City Square remains in the best position to reach its short-term and long-term goals.
Prior to joining City Square Associates, Blake spent six years at a national mortgage headhunting firm in his native Orange County, California. Starting as a part-time employee performing primarily data entry, Blake ultimately became that company’s Client Relations Manager, a position that allowed him to hone his financial management skills.
During his time at UC Irvine, Blake focused his studies on American History and Global Cultures in an attempt to better understand the complex roles that traditions, history, and culture play in modern society. His paper on the economic and political history of Mumbai was a finalist for the university’s Best History Essay award.
(MS, Rivier University; BS, Suffolk University) is the Research Manager at City Square Associates.
As Research Manager, she guides projects involving quantitative and qualitative research; contributing to design, analysis and reporting. Stephanie coordinates with clients and nurtures company relationships throughout the life-cycle of research and consulting projects. She is methodical while constructing and answering questions and uses innate curiosity for a creative approach. Stephanie believes that collaboration and empathetic interactions are key to great results.
Rich education and life experiences lead her to research thoroughly and compile clear, actionable insights. Prior to joining the City Square team, Stephanie gained experience in marketing research at a mass media company. Stephanie’s background includes work in non-profit client outreach, news writing, college-level academic support, and performing music. She has worked closely with unique demographics and communities and is comfortable presenting ideas to wide audiences.
